Disorders That Make Problem Gambling Worse

Mental health is complex and many common disorders coexist within individuals with effects that can be difficult to deal with. So it’s not surprising that when someone struggles with problem gambling, there are likely other disorders that spur the addiction and make it a whole lot worse.

over 90% of problem gamblers suffer from other disorders

Understanding these underlying factors can help get at the root cause to then begin the recovery process. According to the Georgia Dept. of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities found that over 90% of problem gamblers suffer from other disorders. Even more incredible, patients averaged 4.7 different issues over the course of their lifetimes. Researchers found that multiple mental illnesses were common in gambling addicts:

● Depression

○ When one’s outlook is bleak and there appears to be no end in sight, many people turn to compulsive behaviors to cope. The casino or online gambling sites feels like a refuge away from society, but it often sucks in the very vulnerable.

● Mood Disorders

○ 87% of problem gamblers suffer from some type of mood disorder. Namely anxiety disorder and antisocial personality traits.

● ADD/ADHD

○ Many also fit the criteria for Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which can limit impulse control. We also know that addictions feed off each other. Problem gambling is no exception, with a majority of patients reporting to struggle with a secondary addiction.

● Alcoholism

○ 75% of pathological gamblers also abuse alcohol, which loosens inhibitions and quickly makes a gambling habit get out of control.

● Other Drugs

○ 40-63% of gambling addicts also struggle with other narcotics, which also deepen the effects of excessive gambling.

● Compulsive Behaviors

○ While alcohol and drug use are more common amongst male common gamblers, women are more prone to eating disorders and shopping addictions. Sex addiction is also found in 17% of problem gamblers. Another factor frequently coincides with problem gambling, but it creates a vicious loop for those caught in it.

● Criminal History

○ This varies greatly depending on the severity of the gambling addiction, but 50% of problem gamblers commit crimes. Over 68% of serious addicts report stealing or other illegal activities to pay off debts. If you, a patient, or someone you love is suffering from problem gambling, it helps to be aware of the other factors that could be contributing to it. It also highlights people who might be at-risk and what kind of recovery plan is most likely to succeed.
